Wednesday Evening Light Supper Committee
Blessed are you, O Lord
God, King of the Universe, for you give us food to sustain our lives and
make our hearts glad; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Meals were central
to the life of the early church. Luke summarizes the earliest days of the
church: "They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people"
(Acts 2:46, 47 NIV).
It was through
ordinary hospitality that the growing church supported its missionaries
and introduced newcomers to Jesus and the Way. These meals challenged the
boundaries between gender, rank, religion and ethnicity. The meal itself
became a way they celebrated their new kinship in Jesus’ family.
Each Wednesday
evening Fall through Spring members of the community of St. John’s gather together for a
shared meal. The Wednesday Evening Light Supper Committee
coordinates these meals and recruits people and families to cook and clean
up Wednesday evenings from September through May.
