The Youth Voice, March 1, 2003

Pancake

Supper

The Mardi Gras pancake supper is THIS TUESDAY, March 4th and is being organized through the new Fellowship committee. Please sign up in the parish hall this Sunday if you are interested in helping out with the preparation, clean up, or cooking.

CLEC

Forms for Cass Lake Episcopal Camp (CLEC) are now available. CLEC is a wonderful way for youth to grow within a strong community of faith. The Episcopal Church Women of St. John’s provide financial assistance to cover some of the cost for youth from St. John’s interested in participating. Please see Alison for needed forms.

Mission

Trip

Meeting

There will be a meeting on Sunday, March 9th during the Education Hour for Senior High youth (rising 9th graders-college) interested in attending this summer’s trip and their parents. We will be discussing and deciding on when and where we will be going this summer. Please bring your family calendar to this meeting.

Ash

Wednesday

There will be no Confirmation or Junior High Youth Group on March 5th so that we are all free to participate in the Ash Wednesday service. Confirmation students are expected to attend the Ash Wednesday service as well as the Holy Week services in April. Services will be held at Noon and at 7pm.

Teens

Encounter

Christ

It is the time of year for the Spring TEC weekends. TEC is sponsored by the Episcopal Church, but is open to students in grades 9-12 of any religious background. The core activity at TEC is discussion. There will be small group discussions on topics like “Who Am I?” and “Community.” You do not have to be a talker to enjoy learning from the people in your small group. TEC is set up to encourage you in your spiritual journey, at whatever stage you may be in. One of the reasons TEC is encouraged before confirmation is that encourages religious self-examination.

If you have questions about TEC feel free to talk to Alison or any of the following youth who have already participated in a weekend: Kyle, Stephen, Sarah, Megan, Jordan, Katelynn, Elizabeth, Nate, Gretchen, Stephanie, Emmy, and Rachel. Remember that TEC is NOT a secret, but is full of some fun surprises.

Application forms are available from Alison. Please keep in mind that spaces are limited and tend to fill up quickly.

  • Great North TEC (St. Cloud) March 14-16th Forms Due March 8th

  • St. Paul TEC (St. Paul) April 4th-6th Forms Due March 29th

Thought

For

The

Month

"My whole way of thinking about what a church should be has changed. I used to belong to churches where everyone was the same. Now I believe in churches that accept everybody, no matter how 'different' he or she is. Church for me now must be open, inclusive, small enough so each member of the congregation feels known and counted.

I used to believe I knew exactly what was and was not a sin. Now I am not so sure I'm the one who ought to be making that judgment."

                                                                        - Jeanne White, Ryan White's mom

Lenten

Series

Our Wednesdays will look a little bit different in Lent as we take time for self-examination and action. The Lenten series begins on Wednesday, March 12th and runs until April 9th. We will be using “The Justice Mission” curriculum designed by Youth Specialties. This video discussion series follows four teenagers into India as they learn how Christians are called to make a positive difference in the world.

Lenten Series Schedule:

  • 5:30pm-6:30pm: Light Supper

  • 6:30pm-7:00pm: Evening Prayer

  • 7:00pm-8:00pm: Education

The Lenten Series is open to Junior and Senior High youth and is strongly encouraged for those involved in Confirmation.

BINGO

This month’s BINGO game is scheduled for Saturday, March 15th at 1pm. This happens to fall on a Saturday where many of the Senior High youth are out of town for the TEC weekend, so extra help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Maundy

Thursday

Please mark your calendars for April 17th (Maundy Thursday) for the annual Lock-In. More information will follow. Students in grades 8-11 will be invited to attend. This lock-in focuses on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, and is an integral part to Confirmation.
