The Voice of St. John in the Wilderness, April  2002

Parish Outreach Report

Several parish initiatives are now either in progress or about to happen. The United Thank Offering is underway and will soon be followed by the Adopt-A-Room program, which was begun last year; more on that in the May Voice.

The Out-to-Lunch program has seen a resurgence in interest. In February, we were able to offer lunch to 54 guests, which is a substantial increase over recent attendance. Likewise, we are finding new interest among parishioners to help with this program.

If you would like to volunteer for an Out-to-Lunch event, please let us know. The activity is not terribly demanding and there is great joy to be found in working a few hours with fellow parishioners on a Saturday morning. We encourage groups within the parish to participate as a way of experiencing a fellowship and camaraderie they might not otherwise enjoy. Out-to-Lunch is worthwhile, it is meaningful and it is fun.

Finally, on the subject of volunteerism, we are looking for new ways to express our Christian concerns for community through offerings of personal service. We expect to start by surveying the parish to see what sort of volunteer activities are already being pursued. It is likely that, already, many of us are regularly involved in such activities. In most cases, there is opportunity for others to participate, too. This should do for a start and may help us to focus on how to nurture a willing-ness for Christian service.
