The Rector's
Page: Pastoral Care Information
|
|
|
|

The
Rector’s Page June 1, 2006
The following is offered as a quick-guide (not a set of rules) to the
sacramental rites of the church. No such guide can anticipate all
circumstances, so if you have concerns or questions, please speak to
the clergy directly.
Please be aware that due to current confidentiality laws,
clergy
cannot be informed by health care professionals of the need for
pastoral care without your written consent.
If emergency pastoral care is needed in the case of crisis, death, or
severe illness, please call the parish clergy either at home or the
office. Phone numbers are listed in the parish directory.
By Canon Law, all baptized persons, regardless of age or
denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive
Holy Communion.
The sacramental rites of
Reconciliation and
Holy Unction are available
upon request either at a public service of worship or by appointment.
Holy Baptism is normatively reserved for the four baptismal feasts of
the year — The Great Vigil of Easter (or Easter), Pentecost, All
Saints, and The Baptism of Our Lord — and the Bishop’s visitation. Prebaptismal preparation is required.
The sacramental rites of
Marriage or Holy Union are available upon
request. Pre-marriage or union counseling is required. To receive a
wedding customary detailing liturgical, process, and financial issues,
please speak to the parish administrator, Maureen Vruno, or
download
it on our parish website.
In the event of impending death, or of
death itself, please call the
clergy directly, so that the sacramental rites of the church may be
offered.
Holy Communion is available for those who are ill or homebound, upon
request or on a regular schedule.
Lay Eucharistic Visitors exercise
this ministry under the day-to-day oversight of the clergy.

Living Faith. Exploring the Essentials of Christianity
Part of our spiritual journey must be a ceaseless exploration of who
God is, what God asks of us, and what God desires for us. During June,
we continue a ten part video series
Living Faith
(additional
link), covering the
essentials of Christianity. Whether you are a newcomer to Christianity
or a cradle Episcopalian, if you seek a renewed, deeper, or more
mature understanding of the Christian faith, please join us Sundays in
the Parlor from 9 to 9:50 am!
Each meeting consists of a 25 minute video with
Anglican bishop and theologian Tom Wright, followed by discussion among ourselves.
Bishop
Wright taught New Testament studies at
Oxford University,
Cambridge
University,
McGill
University and
Regent
College for 20 years. He has written over 30 books
and has received both academic acclaim as well as praise for the
transparency of his popular writings.
Christianity Today named him as one of the top five
theologians in the world. The third volume of his magisterial series
Christian Origins and the Question of God won the
2003 Theologos Award as the book of
the year.
Tackling the Da Vinci Code
On June 4, the Sunday following the Fellowship outing to see The Da
Vinci Code, we will take on some of the claims in the book and movie
and put them to the test of history and current scholarship. We will
meet in the Parlor from 9 to 9:50 am.
The Purpose Driven Life
In
his best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life,
Pastor Rick Warren
reminds us we were planned for God’s pleasure, formed for God’s
family, created to become like Christ, shaped for serving God, and
made for a mission. On June 7, Father Mark will complete this six part
Wednesday evening series on the ways these simple truths should change
our lives.

Hey everybody, did we have a successful spring rummage sale, or what?
We netted about $1,800, more than we have in years! Thanks to everyone
who donated good stuff, chairpersons, workers who sorted and priced,
and especially to soup makers, Beverly Boyle, Joann Smith, and June
Bennett. Special thanks to Sexton Jim Knauss, whose efforts went above

New Manitou Days Event!

Watch your Small Voice each week for details as they develop around a
wonderful new Manitou Days event! A Lighted Boat Parade at dusk on
Wednesday, June 28th has inspired us to bring our 7 pm Eucharist
outdoors at White Bear Lake (weather permitting) followed by our
clergy offering Boat Blessings prior to the parade.
If you can help with the use of a pontoon boat docked on White Bear
Lake, or on a working trailer (we’ll find the truck to tow it), please
contact Maureen ASAP by
or 651/429-5351 ext. 10.

Manitou Days Grand Parade and All Parish Cookout June 23
|
|
|
|
Come join the fun and excitement on Friday afternoon, June 23rd.
Grill-masters Chris Hawley, Jason Knauss and John Vruno will have
grilled food, buns, condiments & beverages ready for your enjoyment at
5:30 pm. Please bring a bag of chips or package of cookies to share
with fellow parishioners. Let’s keep it simple; no one really wants to
do dishes and miss the parade!
The Grand Parade is rain or shine. We are looking into towing a
flat-bed trailer in our unit this year for our participants who might
enjoy a rest from the long walk of the parade route. Of course, we’ll
have plenty of candy available to distribute to spectators along the
route. Our line up spot is yet to be determined, but Parish
Administrator Maureen Vruno has requested of parade organizers that
St. John’s unit lines up right in front of the church. The parade will
begin at 6:30 pm sharp.
Clergy & Staff, Music & Liturgy,
Fellowship,
Young Adults,
Youth, and
Families Inc. are already actively involved, and it’s not too late for
any other individuals or parish groups to become involved too!
Traffic and parking will be very challenging. Please carpool, arrive
early, and drop a vehicle ahead of time if possible. We are
brainstorming possible drop off locations west of Hwy 61 to ease
getting vehicles in and out of downtown before the parade.
Watch the weekly
Small Voice for details, and RSVP to Maureen Vruno by
or 651/429-5351 ext. 10. so we have
an accurate head count.

Manitou Days Pet Parade and St. Francis Blessing July 1
|
|
|
|
A Pet Parade and St. Francis Blessing are again featured Manitou Days
events this year, thanks to Town Life Magazine in partnership with St.
John in the Wilderness. Parade registration begins on Saturday, July
1st at 10:30 am on Clark Avenue beginning at 2nd Street.
The parade will proceed southbound toward the lake on the west side of
the parkway, then turn back north along the east side of the parkway
and in front of the church. We have asked all our clergy to be present
for the St. Francis blessings for all those desiring such. Pets will
be judged following the St. Francis blessing, if desired by their
owners, in fun categories such as smallest, largest and most unique
pet, best pet costume, and pet & owner who most resemble each other.
Judges are Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt, Fire Chief
Tim Vadnais, Mayor Paul Auger, & Town Life Publisher Catherine Carey.
All staff have been asked to be on hand as well. We need volunteers to
provide ice-cold lemonade for hot and thirsty pet owners as we did
last year.
Everyone in the parish is invited to participate in the parade with a
pet (or Teddy Bear) or help in a variety of ways to make this a
wonderful community event and showcase our beloved parish in its best
light. To help with event logistics or hospitality, please contact
Maureen Vruno, Parish Administrator, by
or 651/429-5351 ext. 10. Youth volunteers, please contact Alison Feigh,

Living in the Spirit of Pentecost: A Call to Healing and Wholeness
|
|
|
|
It was a time of transformation from fear to action.
The followers of
Jesus had watched Him ascend into heaven. Afterwards, they had
retreated, confused and fearful, to an upper room in Jerusalem. There
they hid and prayed and waited “to be baptized by the Holy Spirit,” as
Jesus had promised.
It was a
sudden baptism of fire that they experienced on that
Pentecost morning as recounted in Acts 2. The experience propelled the
disciples out of hiding and into a community life of prayer, of
teaching, of fellowship, of laying-on of hands, of anointing, and of
healing.
These were the practices of the early Church, and it is to these
practices that we are called today.
Prayer, forgiveness, community worship, hands-on healing, and
anointing are all God-connections. Through each of these, we walk in
love and light with Him who embodies both.
“God is light,” John
reminds us in his first letter to those in the early Church. “In Him,
there is no darkness at all.”
And yet, all of us, at times, slip into darkness. We lose our balance
of body, mind, and spirit. We are overwhelmed by sadness, by sickness,
by work, by worry. We lose our connection with God. We find it
difficult, if not impossible, to pray.
We need others to help us regain our balance and our God-connection.
We need the healing power of the Holy Spirit. In our needs and in our
reaching out to others in our faith community, we are no different
from those who shaped the earliest Christian communities by gathering
together to pray and to lay hands upon each other.
Every Sunday morning and every Wednesday evening, re-connection to God
through prayer and the laying on of hands is available to everyone. On
Sunday mornings, you can come to the narthex before or after receiving
communion. Members of the healing team, both clergy and lay, will
listen
to your needs, lay on hands, and pray for you—or for healing help for
someone else you name. What you express remains between you and God,
from whom all healing comes. Healers are present to convey God’s love
and to help you release whatever is blocking your connection to God.
If you can’t express what is on your heart, don’t let that keep you
from seeking healing. Ask for prayer to discern what troubles you or
ask that healers lay hands on you in silence. What’s important is that
you ask and that you open yourself to God’s healing grace.
Worship, prayer, communion, healing, sharing—these are the life
rhythms of the early Church that we are reclaiming today. I invite you
to share in all these practices.
I also invite you to pray for the first four lay healers whom we will
commission this month: Sherri Afryl, Cathryn Bashore, Dianne Del
Giorno, and Colleen Johnson. They will join clergy in the laying-on of
hands at our Wednesday night healing services and during our Sunday
morning services. Please keep them in your prayers as they grow as
healers and work together with clergy to build the healing ministry at
St. John’s.

African Friends in Need Network (AFINNET)
|
|
|
|
The African Friends in Need Network (AFINNET) became a fully
registered Voluntary Christian Development Organization in 2002 in
Uganda to benefit women, youth and children in rural areas. Its
Headquarters is in Mityana in the Mubende District, about 30 miles SW
of Kampala.
Uganda is the smallest East African country, but with a population of
over 20 million in over 40 different tribes and cultures, it is one of
the most densely populated and poorest countries in Africa.
AFINNET has a Christian background, yet cooperates with people and
organizations of all cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Uganda obtained independence in 1962. For 30+ years since, civil wars
and dictatorial rule severely disrupted the country's religious,
socio-economic, cultural and political institutions, throwing the
population into unprecedented poverty. The adverse effects of
political upheavals: tens of thousands were killed or displaced; many
women and girls were victims of rape; fields were abandoned; personal
property was destroyed; hospitals, health centers, clinics, schools
and infrastructure were laid to total waste.
Though there is now a bit of political stability and acknowledgement
of the problem, support to poor rural dwellers is limited. There are
no survival opportunities for youth, especially girls, or young women
and their children. Sub-Saharan African women are undervalued and
over-worked. Women’s low status results in the neglect of daughters,
and a cycle of women, wives and mothers who are mistreated and
uneducated. The primary role of women is seen as childbearing, and a
woman's status is reflected by the number of children she has. The
education of females is often disregarded, and girls often marry
young, uneducated and unhappy.
Despite strong Christian influence, there are many polygamous
marriages, especially in more rural areas. Women agree to become a
man's 2nd or even 3rd wife for fear of being left unmarried and
socially excluded.
Ugandan women rise at sunrise and work until night-time, responsible
for farming, cooking, childcare and most other household duties.
Husbands have few responsibilities and many spend their days drinking
in local bars.
AFINNET advocates for the rightful place of rural women in the
society, and fights their exploitation and violence against them.

information packets & itinerary, and go over trip details. Please talk
to Alison if you or a family representative can’t attend.
Manitou Days Parade
All youth please come to church on Friday, June 23rd for BBQ and to
represent St. John’s in the Manitou Days parade. We have had a great
time at this the past 2 years. We’ll provide more information closer
to the parade date.
Vacation Bible School
Sixth-twelfth graders interested in helping with VBS the week of June
26th-30th, please talk to Alison. We need song leaders, craft helpers,
and small group leaders. Please consider providing a great week of
faith formation for our youngest parishioners.
Episcopal Youth Music Camp
Spaces are filling up quickly for EYMC, August 13th-19th at
Camp
Heartland in Willow River, MN. Campers get musical
instruction while still having time for traditional camp activities.
Please see Alison for more camp information, registration materials,
or to provide needed financial support to this program.
